GE has been convinced to invest a whopping US $600 million in the solar panel manufacturing industry. They are of the belief that this investment shall be worth it and shall reap the seamless benefits because solar panels seem to be an answer to the future of the mankind. This new factory set up as an initiative of being a good corporate citizen and invest heavily in to the solar panel industry is going to provide employment to 400 people and make the production possible of enough electricity (through the sun's power) to be supplied to around 80,000 homes on a yearly basis. These statistics are based upon what GE announced in a recent press release. The location of the plant where this huge project shall be implemented is not disclosed yet. However, the speculations say that the plants will be located in the multiple locations. GE gained confidence in setting up a plant dedicated for the production of the solar panels after it discovered that the thin film photovoltaic solar panels that they make are highly efficient and can compete in the world markets appropriately. There is evidence from the National Renewable Energy Lab (Colorado) to support such claims. The low cost, large scale manufacturing of the solar panels is governed because of the cheap Cadmium Telluride that is used as a raw material in the production of these products. GE is very much dedicated in the technology aspects of solar panel production. It is very much confident about the solar panels of the thin film type. The Company is of the belief that the solar panels manufactured using thin film type is known to be more versatile than the traditional solar panels built with the photovoltaic modules of silicon crystals. For growing in the solar panel industry, GE bought the remaining shares in the Prime Star Solar Company. GE had initially taken a majority stake in this company in the year 2008. This makes GE the big manufacturer in the world for solar panels in terms of market competition. Its only competitor in terms of market share is First Solar which is the world's biggest standalone company in the solar panel manufacturing. The solar panel plant business is viewed upon by the senior executives of GE as a source of multi-billion dollar revenue just like it had reaped benefits from the wind power sector when it had invested without any hesitation when other companies and businesses were skeptical about the idea. The forecasters of GE Company are of the opinion that the solar panels' demands in the markets are going to grow to a great extent in the forthcoming five years. Estimations state that there will be a growth in demand of more than 75 Gigawatts per year and so on. The plan of GE Company in order to take a bet in to the stakes of solar power industry by investing heavily in the infrastructure related to the plant is a witness that this company is very much confident about the technological aspects that it can derive from such huge investments. GE wants to be the first company in the history of the world who lead the world into the multi-gigawatt roadmap. The Company has announced that it has formed alliances to take up on this project.
