Myths About Solar Panels

The solar panel industry is constantly surrounded by various myths and misconceptions as they pop up from various kinds of sources. There is a most popular myth that goes saying that there is more energy required in the manufacturing of the solar panels than it can ever generate in the serviceable lifespan. In this article, we are going to explore some myths about solar panels. The above stated myth is not true at all! It is seen that even the solar panels that have very low quality generate far more amount of energy cumulative over its entire lifespan than that goes into the production of the same. There is a variation in the average payback time as it all depends upon the solar panels as well as for application for which it is used. But the payback time, on an average is only 1-4 years. An average life span of a solar panel is about more than 25 years. Hence it can be concluded that there is a far more production of energy.

There are some countries of the world which offer enormous amounts of generous subsidies in solar panel installations. This is a topic of debate since it invokes an argument that it is an unfair deal for the taxpayers. Citizens usually fail to understand that the fossil fuels themselves are very heavily subsidized. Hence offering of subsidies on the solar panels and their installations is not that of a big deal. This is especially because solar panel installation is a onetime spending. Hence it is better even for the government to offer subsidies on them since a home owner cannot avail subsidy on the solar panel installation for more than one property. Solar panel is expected to replace all the fossil fuels by the end of the decade from now on, maybe even sooner.

It is a myth that summer season is the best possible time in order to make use of the solar panels and hence install it. But it is not the case. Very few people know that one of the main enemies of the solar panels is the excessive heat. In summer, there is a lot of heat in the environment which heats up the solar panels. This is because the efficiency of the solar panels is affected to be inversely proportional to the amount of heat that us generated via them.

One more myth is that the people connect their solar power systems with the grids which supply electricity from the utility companies so that during blackouts, there is still power available to them for usage as long as the sun is shining brightly in the sky. But in reality, there is a shutdown of the grid if there is a blackout in an area. The shutdown is essential so that the workers can fix all the problems related to the blackout. Hence to make available power during the blackout, the solar panels need to be connected to the utility company grid via some expensive components that make a very complex mechanism.

Some people are of the opinion (yes, another myth) that the solar panels can cause fire. But there are statistics that revel something else. The Clean Energy Council in Australia in the year 2010 had released a press statement that not even a single solar panel installation was reported to cause fire out of the 100,000 installations Australia wide in the last three decades!

There is also a myth that the nuclear power is much cheaper than the solar panels. But what people fail to understand that the nuclear energy itself is very much subsidized. Related articles
